The New York Jets were in trouble as soon as HC Robert Saleh stated that he wouldn’t pursue a replacement for Aaron Rodgers.
The team decided to stick with Zach Wilson in the preseason, and after some rave reviews and reports of improvement, they gave him yet another chance to prove his worth.
But it’s been three years, and Wilson has shown little-to-no improvement whatsoever, and he’s once again the only thing holding his team back.
That’s why Stephen A. Smith didn’t mince his words about him on “First Take,” stating that he’s playing like “hot garbage” and seems to be immature.
“He’s just playing like hot garbage. But more importantly than that, he seems to be immature.”

“First Take’s” production also shows that, among 34 qualifying QBs, Wilson ranks last in completion percentage (52%), second-to-last in total QBR (27), 32nd in yards per attempt (5.6), and is tied for 31st in touchdowns and interceptions (two and four, respectively).
Smith also talked about how Saleh could be making a mistake by being so supportive of Wilson, as he’s adding “a little sauce” to it and it might rub some people the wrong way.
Last season made it evident that plenty of people inside the locker room and the organization have already lost all faith in Wilson, and rightfully so.
Zach was a standout player at BYU and had a remarkable pro day, but it’s time to realize that he may never be a starting-caliber player in the league.
He’s been the worst QB in the NFL for three consecutive years, yet he continues to find his way back on the field because of injuries, and that cannot continue to happen if the Jets want to get over the hump.
