The New England Patriots may have lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in their home opener during Week 1, but they played much more competitively than some thought.
The Patriots lost 25-20, but the defense was impressive limiting explosive plays and forcing the Eagles to kick multiple field goals.
Offensively, Mac Jones showed marked improvement as a passer and game manager and kept New England within striking distance for most of the afternoon.
Bill Belichick may not have the most talented of rosters in the 2023 NFL season, but it’s clear he’s still got the ability to maximize players and their talents.
At this point, there’s almost no doubt that Belichick will go down in league history as one of the, if not, the best head coach ever.
With how much time he’s devoted his life to football, Belichick could retire soon but he’s apparently determined to surpass Don Shula for most all-time wins via Christopher Price of Boston Sports Globe.
This is reportedly because Shula badmouthed the Patriots during the Spygate scandal.
In 2007, Shula said: “The Spygate thing has diminished what they’ve accomplished, you would hate to have that attached to your accomplishments. They’ve got it.”
Update: The reason #Patriots coach Bill Belichick won’t retire yet and wants to pass Don Shula’s all-time wins mark, is because Shula badmouthed him during the Spygate scandal, per @cpriceglobe via @DolphinsTalk

Shula currently holds the record for most head coaching wins with 347, but Belichick is right behind him with 329.
Working in the Patriots’ head coach and general manager’s favor is that the league switched to an 18-week season which gives him one more opportunity to rack up wins.
It could take Belichick a couple more years to pass Shula, but he shows no signs of slowing down.
