The New York Giants shocked the world by signing Saquon Barkley to a one-year contract.
Barkley was slated to play under the franchise tag, but now that he has a new contract, he’s expected to report to training camp immediately.
The details surrounding this deal were initially unknown, particularly regarding how the two sides came together to make this decision.
However, Josina Anderson relayed that the two sides “never stopped” discussing this deal.
As for when the #Giants & @saquon started talks on a deal to elevate his tag figure on the 1-year term only permitted now after the multi-year deadline passed for franchise players?
“It never stopped,” I’m told this morning.
All the #Giants wanted is to have him with the team.

She also cited that the Giants “wanted to have him with the team.”
While this isn’t a permanent solution, it does rid Barkley of the franchise tag, and he is now signed to a regular, one-year deal.
This buys the Giants more time, as they have an opportunity to craft a contract for the 2024 season and beyond.
Barkley’s contract is a step in the right direction for him and the running back position as a whole.
Josh Jacobs was in a similar spot to Barkley’s before this new deal was constructed.
The pressure could be on for the Las Vegas Raiders to sign him to a different deal, especially now that Barkley has been signed.
While Barkley had a fantastic season in 2022, Jacobs led the league in rushing.
If he can’t get a deal done, the Raiders will likely face the wrath of their fans and other backs across the league.
However, Barkley and the Giants can rest easy, knowing he’s tied to the organization for another season.
Can they replicate their success in 2022, returning to the playoffs?
