The New York Jets suffered a massive setback in Week 1 when they lost Aaron Rodgers for the remainder of the 2023 NFL season when he ruptured his Achilles on their offensive first drive of the game.
Rodgers took a sack from Leonard Floyd and stayed down on the ground for a while, signaling that something was wrong.
Eventually, he was helped off the field and Zach Wilson took over for him for the rest of the game.
Wilson is now expected to be the team’s starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, though that hasn’t stopped speculation from ramping up that the Jets could look for another option midseason.
Their upcoming game against the Dallas Cowboys could influence their decision to go after a more seasoned veteran if they’re intent on competing this season.
However, Jay Glazer of FOX reported that New York believes none of their outside options are better than Wilson and that they hope he can just be an efficient player.
“The Jets don’t feel any of their outside options are better,” Glazer said.
From FOX: Aaron Rodgers does want to return to play again, per @JayGlazer, although it’s currently: “Way to early to know” if he’ll be able to do it this season despite the “Speed Bridge” surgery.

Perhaps the Jets have a point that bringing in another option wouldn’t be much better than Wilson who has been in the system for a couple of seasons and got the benefit of learning under Rodgers for a few months.
It might be worth letting Wilson just handle the reins for the time being as it would be difficult to integrate a new quarterback midway through the year.
Hopefully, the former number two overall pick can manage in Rodgers’ absence, though the next few weeks will go a long way in determining if he’s right for the job.
