The Washington Commanders made a quarterback change this week when the team benched season-long starter Sam Howell for veteran backup Jacoby Brissett.
Brissett took over for Howell in the fourth quarter of each of the Commanders’ past two games and threw for three touchdowns, but couldn’t bring Washington back to win either contest.
He looks like the better quarterback option for a team looking toward the offseason, but his status for Week 17 is now up in the air after Brissett picked up a hamstring injury in Friday’s practice, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
#Commanders QB Jacoby Brissett is now questionable with a hamstring injury that he suffered in today’s practice. He was just added. That opens the door to Sam Howell potentially stepping in… and starting again.
Something to monitor prior to Sunday against the #49ers.

This would be a cruel twist of fate for a Commanders team finally trying to make a change.
Howell hasn’t been very good this season, but head coach Ron Rivera stuck it out with the second-year passer to see what the team had in him.
Howell has thrown for 3,624 passing yards this season but leads the NFL with 17 interceptions.
Brissett, meanwhile, stepped in and almost immediately played better than Howell in his limited time on the field over the past two weeks.
A matchup against the vaunted San Francisco 49ers defense doesn’t make the situation any better if Howell has to step in as the starter once more.
Late-week injuries are always tough to come back from right before game time, but it’s unclear how severe Brissett’s ailment is and if it will affect his status for the game.
The good news for Washington, though, is a loss in Week 17 only betters the team’s draft position in April, where they could snag a quarterback at the top of the first round.
