There was a time when Barry Sanders was synonymous with the Detroit Lions.
He was the team’s offense, carrying them every year.
Sanders managed to have at least 1,000 rushing yards from 1989 to 1998.
He’s in a class of his own, earning Pro Bowl honors in each of his ten NFL seasons.
These accomplishments made him deserving of the bronze statue the Lions franchise made in his honor.
ESPN reporter for the Lions Eric Woodyard tweeted, “It’s official! Here’s your first look at the 8-foot bronze statue of #Lions great Barry Sanders — one of the greatest players in NFL history. He is the 1st Lions player to receive a statue.”

Despite his dominance, the Lions struggled for many seasons during his career.
However, his highlights are still a talking point for many fans around the sports world today.
Sadly, he retired early as he lost the joy of the game after many losing seasons.
He could have played more years, but what he’s given was enough to enshrine him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The statue will cement his legacy to more generations of Lions fans.
As they commemorate his impact on the squad, everyone who supports the Lions will unanimously proclaim that there will be no other player like him.
