Even with Sean Payton manning the sidelines, the Denver Broncos were unable to win their home opener against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season.
The Broncos did well to control time of possession, slowly chipping away at the Raiders’ defense and ending drives with a score.
However, the second half was a completely different story as Denver stalled out on multiple drives which allowed Jimmy Garoppolo and the Las Vegas offense to march down the field and come back to win.
Now heading into Week 2 against the Washington Commanders, there is a lot of pressure on Russell Wilson and the team to win and prove that they can hang in the loaded AFC West.
Although Wilson threw two touchdowns against the Raiders, his performance as a whole was lacking as he failed to make many splash plays throughout the afternoon.
Should Wilson struggle again, analysts like Emmanuel Acho believe he could be benched via Speak.

Benching Wilson so early in the season seems a little drastic, but with a new head coach in Payton, anything could happen.
Payton is going to play the person that is best suited to help the team win immediately, so there are no guarantees Wilson will remain the starter for the rest of the year.
Hints of a change were potentially made in free agency when the Broncos decided to sign Jarrett Stidham to a two-year deal.
Stidham may not have the resume that Wilson does, but at this point it’s hard to say whether or not the latter has done enough to prove his status as the starting quarterback.
