The Wild Card picture in the American League has the Tampa Bay Rays far ahead in the first spot.
Then, the 83-67 Toronto Blue Jays are one game ahead of both the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers.
Those are the teams that still have control of their own destiny.
Of those four, three will make it into October… unless the New York Yankees can pull off the miracle.
The 76-74 Yanks are six games behind the M’s and Rangers, with 12 left to play.
They need to win just about every game they have left at this point, and hope the teams in front of them collapse.
A Yankees insider detailed their minimal chances.
“Entering tonight’s series against the Blue Jays, the Yankees are 6 games out of the third WC spot. FanGraphs projects them as having a 0.3% (3/1000) chance of making the playoffs. If they finish 12-0, Playoff Status has them projected with a 63% chance of making the playoffs,” Chris Kirschner tweeted.

It will be crucial for the Yankees to win every game against the Blue Jays because they can be one of the teams that need to start losing games in bunches for the Yankees to have a chance at that last Wild Card spot.
The Yanks know that there might not be a realistic chance to make the postseason as things stand, but they need to take it one day at a time and, particularly, one game at a time.
As long as they have a mathematical chance, they should go out and play their best baseball hoping one or two of the teams above them starts slipping.
