After being dominated by star pitcher Zac Gallen, the New York Yankees lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday and were eliminated from playoff contention.
On Monday, both teams played a rescheduled afternoon game, and it was a sad sight.

Of course, it makes sense: with the Yankees already out of the race, on a Monday afternoon and on a cold day, there wasn’t going to be a large crowd to watch the game.
The most surprising development was the reported attendance for the game, per Bryan Hoch.
Today’s announced attendance at Yankee Stadium: 41,096

It’s safe to say that number is nowhere near the actual attendance.
In any case, the D-Backs are still in the race for the NL Wild Card and the game had a lot of importance for them.
They lost, 6-4, but they are in a tie with the Chicago Cubs for the second Wild Card spot in the National League.
Still, things are so tight there that every loss could be too much to overcome.
The Miami Marlins are just one game behind the D-Backs and Cubs as of Monday afternoon.
As for the Yankees, they will close out a disappointing season with two road series against the Toronto Blue Jays and the Kansas City Royals.
Their only reasonable goal at this point is finishing with a positive record.
They are, after Monday’s win, 79-77, so anything can happen.
The team hasn’t had a below-.500 season since 1992, so it would be an embarrassing way to end their horrible 2023.
