The Chicago Cubs were playing the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.
In the middle of a race for a Wild Card spot, Chicago has played sloppy, mediocre baseball in September and has really jeopardized their playoff chances.
Playing in Atlanta on Wednesday, Chicago was up 3-1 until the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Braves scored one there and the game reached the eighth inning with the Cubs leading, 3-2.
The bullpen, however, was unable to contain Atlanta’s potent offense and they tied the game in the bottom of the eighth.
Chicago then went ahead with a run in the top of the ninth, but their bullpen once again blew things and let the Braves tie the action, 4-4, in the bottom of the ninth.
The Cubs took another lead in the top of the 10th, but Atlanta scored two when they had their chance and walked things off in heartbreaking fashion for Chicago.
Julian Merryweather, Mark Leiter Jr., and Daniel Palencia each allowed runs in the late innings.
“The Cubs have now lost 5 games this month after holding a lead in the 8th inning or later. That’s tied for their most such losses in any single month over the last 50 seasons (June 1991 & September 1992),” ESPN Stats & Info tweeted.

As you can see thanks to ESPN Stats & Info, it’s far from the first time this month that the Cubs blew a game they have led in the eighth inning or later.
That’s when the true heroes have to step up, but Chicago’s bullpen has been particularly ineffective this month.
Now, the Cubs are tied with the Marlins for the last Wild Card spot, and Miami holds the tiebreaker.
It could be a disastrous end of the season for the Cubbies if they don’t snap out of it.
